What is happiness?

Since I write a blog titled Scripting Happiness, I thought it made sense to talk about what happiness means (at least to me).

As I thought about this blog, it occurred to me that many experiences that may make us “feel” happy may actually be detrimental in the long run (e.g., smoking). The reverse is also true. Going to law school and becoming a lawyer – that entire process is not what I would describe as happy. In fact, it would be the opposite.

So, what is happiness?

The two books I’ve read on happiness are The Happiness Hypothesis and Stumbling on Happiness.  So, I’ve given some thought on the subject.

Now, at this point in my life, I feel overall happy (4.0 ish/5.0). There are other things I could do to feel happier but many of these long term goals require immediate sacrifice, which may or may not reduce the current happiness rating.

Here’s our Scripting Happiness list in no particular order

  1. Living debt free
  2. Time & freedom
  3. Simple & frugal living
  4. Health
  5. Good food
  6. Home
  7. Love, kindness, and thanks
  8. Doing good
  9. Learning
  10. Being self employed & earning money

I’m sure I could come up with a much longer list but I think if I can manage these top 10 Scripting Happiness items well, I’d be happier. So, over the next few weeks, I’ll start exploring each item and figure out both short and long term strategies for achieving it.

I’d love your feedback and input! What’s on your Scripting Happiness list?

As my law school friends and I used to say, “and we are paying for this? to get tortured!”
